President and CEO Jay Timmons to Deliver the 51勛圖厙 State of Manufacturing Address

Washington, D.C. The 51勛圖厙 will kick off its 2023 Competing to Win Tour on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2023, traveling to three states and visiting four manufacturing facilities along the way.

The tour will begin in Wisconsin, where 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons will deliver the 2023 51勛圖厙 State of Manufacturing Address at Husco.

Throughout the week, Timmons will join local manufacturers, employees, media, community leaders and elected officials to discuss the challenging environment facing manufacturers and the urgent need for solutions on issues including immigration reform, permitting reform, workforce development, tax policy and more.

The tour comes as nearly two-thirds of manufacturers are concerned about the challenging economic environment characterized by inflation, supply chain disruption and the workforce crisis, according to the 51勛圖厙s latest Manufacturers Outlook Survey. More than three-quarters of respondents said pushing back against regulatory overreach should be the top priority of the 118th Congress.

Our focus on this tour is telling the story of resilient, modern manufacturingand the tools we need from policymakers to continue leading our economy forward and making the world a better place, said Timmons. To unleash our full potential, we need to reinstate critical tax provisions, a smarter, balanced approach to regulations, immigration reform and significant permitting reform, and reject top-down air regulations that cost jobs and snarl supply chains.”

For more than a decade, the annual 51勛圖厙 State of Manufacturing Address has focused the nations attention on the industry that is the backbone of the American economy, highlighting the 13 million men and women who are building our future.

The 51勛圖厙 has frequently traveled the country, bringing policy discussions and conversations about the future of work to shop floors, schools, economic clubs, televisions studios, the White House and more.

What Manufacturers Should Know about Hiring Military Talent

With 200,000 people transitioning out of the military annually, in addition to veterans, reservists and military spouses, the military population represents a highly skilled talent pool that manufacturers are eager to tap. But how should they go about doing so?

At a recent , the Manufacturing Institutethe 51勛圖厙s 501(c)3 workforce development and education partnerbrought together veterans who have transitioned successfully out of the military into manufacturing careers, as well as manufacturers who have prioritized attracting and retaining military talent. The panelists discussed how companies can leverage this talent, and heres some of what they had to say.

A great fit: If you look at manufacturing, a large part of the job is doing things well, day after day after dayand thats essentially what happens in the military. Its that military discipline. Its one of the most compelling reasons why we should be aggressively hiring military veterans, said Dow Global Business Director Greg Bunker.

  • Weve got three principles in our organization that we call ROI: responsibility, operational excellence and innovation. We know that veterans bring each of these to the table,” said UnitedHealth Group Director of People Analytics Troy Vandenberg (formerly director of people analytics at Smithfield Foods).

Networking matters: Transitioning from the military to the civilian workforce can be difficult, but veterans who make direct connections with manufacturers often land excellent job offers. The MIs Heroes MAKE America program facilitates those connections, offering veterans opportunities to meet manufacturers as well as support in the job search process.

  • Nicole Rena, an Army veteran and now a shift operations manager at Smithfield Foods, applied to five jobs at Smithfield and didnt hear back on any of them. But then the program manager at HMA contacted Smithfields talent acquisition department to ask if they could speak with Rena about why she wasnt chosen, so she could be more successful moving forward.
  • As Rena put it, The first 15 minutes of the call was about what I could do better on my resume, but after talking about my background and what I was looking for, the talent acquisition lead said he was going to count this as my first interview.
  • She landed the job! In her 18 months at Smithfield, Rena has been promoted twice.

Language can be a barrier: Renas experience speaks to one of the disconnects identified by veterans and manufacturers alikethe language used in job descriptions and resumes. Veterans often do not know how to best describe their skills and experiences in a way that civilian employers can understand.

  • To avoid missing out on great talent, the panelists advised, manufacturers should ensure that a leader with a military background is involved in the hiring process, to translate military lingo and skills into more familiar manufacturing terms.
  • Manufacturers should also specify in their job descriptions whether they will accept military experience as equivalent to an associates or bachelors degree, Bunker advised.

Support is crucial: Once veterans have been hired, the company must ensure they are set up for success. Transitioning is a really scary process for veterans. Its very stressful. The support that a company can provide is huge, said Meg Zehringer, a Coast Guard veteran and a corporate environmental engineer at National Gypsum.

  • Employee resource groups are a great way to provide support to veterans while also serving as a platform to advocate for population-specific needs, the panelists agreed.
  • To be most effective, ERGs should be run by employees, not human resources departments, noted Vandenberg. Bunker added that establishing connections between the ERG and company leaders is also key.

The last word: Equally as important as the wording of your job descriptions and preferred skills is creating a culture that invites a diverse group of people. Thats going to play a huge factor in attracting veterans, said Zehringer.

Automation isnt just changing the manufacturing industry; its enabling human-centric progress in tackling the industrys workforce crisis.

In action: As part of the Automation Fair in Chicago last week, more than 15,000 attendees got to see how manufacturersand companies like Rockwell Automationare providing solutions to the shortage, which 2.1 million unfilled jobs by 2030, according to research from the Manufacturing Institute (the workforce development and education partner of the 51勛圖厙) and Deloitte.

  • Rockwell Automation brought the , a project of the 51勛圖厙 and the MI, to its Automation Fair, giving students, parents, educators and manufacturers the chance to see firsthand how digital transformation and new technologies are supporting careers and opportunities in modern manufacturing.
  • The tours much-heralded immersive experience, along with displays and programs featuring experts from the MI and the Manufacturing Leadership Council (the digital transformation division of the 51勛圖厙), gave attendees insight into the pathways and support available in the industry.
  • FactoryFix, the official recruiting partner of Creators Wanted, was also on hand to showcase its manufacturing talent platform for job seekersand manufacturers searching for a one-stop recruiting solution.

Changing perceptions: Creators Wanted aims to shrink the workforce gap by dispelling myths about automation and attracting the next generation to manufacturing jobs. Its seeing impressive success, MI President Carolyn Lee said during a session at the event.

  • Today 40% of parents have a positive perception of manufacturing, Lee said, citing a recent joint . And what were finding is that parents see these are durable careers with great possibility and opportunity, and theyre encouraging their children to consider them.

Digital help: Digital is going to help manufacturers deal with their workforce issues because its going to not only help change the perception of the industry, but create new jobs going forward, particularly in math-intensive areas like data analytics and artificial intelligence, said MLC Vice President and Executive Director David Brousell.

  • Brousell cited the MLCs , saying, We have to think about digital transformation as human-centric digital transformationbecause weve got to bring the technology and the people together simultaneously to have an effective transformation.

Impressive results: Since it began just more than a year ago, the Creators Wanted Tour has seen more than 8,000 students pass through its immersive mobile experience, where more than 75% of attendees leave with a significantly improved view of manufacturing.

  • More than 510,000 students and career mentors have also signed up to learn more about modern manufacturing careers.
  • Creators Wanted has recruited successfully both mentors and mentees for the mentorship program of , an MI initiative that aims to close the gender gap in manufacturing.
  • The Automation Fair offered more than 150 interactive sessions on the newest industrial solutions and best practices, and more than 200 companies exhibited across 200,000 square feet at Chicagos McCormick Place.

Manufacturers continue to face an alarming workforce shortagewhich could result in 2.1 million unfilled jobs by 2030, according to a study by The Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte.

The MIthe workforce development and education partner of the 51勛圖厙is working hard to fill that gap. MI President Carolyn Lee spoke at the last week about how manufacturers are taking on this critical issue and what lies ahead.

The challenge: One of the biggest long-term issues our industry is confronting is the perception problem, said Lee. Many Americansusually parentscling to the belief that the manufacturing industry is not a place where people can find satisfying, well-paying lifelong careers. Our industry needs to overcome this perception and grow the supply of young workers.

Making progress: That brings me back to good news: perceptions are changing, said Lee. Thanks to movements like , and campaigns like the 51勛圖厙 and The Manufacturing Institutes campaign, which is touring the country right now, we are moving the needle.

  • Were showcasing modern manufacturing as we know it to be: exciting, rewarding, clean and high-tech, said Lee. Thanks to these efforts, the positive perception of manufacturing among adults in the past few years has grown from 27% to 40%.

Promoting programs: Lee spoke about a range of programs offered by the MI that are designed to help build an expansive and inclusive manufacturing workforce. These programs include:

  • , formerly known as the STEP Ahead program, which supports women in manufacturing;
  • , which eases the transition to civilian careers for veterans and other members of the military community; and
  • , which was originally founded by Toyota before transitioning over to the MI in 2019, and which offers an earn and learn apprenticeship experience.

Pushing policy: Lee noted the importance of ensuring that government policy is aligned with the needs and realities of the manufacturing industry. She also highlighted elements of the 51勛圖厙s policy blueprint for bolstering manufacturers competitiveness. Proposed policies include:

  • Reorienting the education system and its funding around a skills and employer-involved model;
  • Updating federal tax policy to encourage and reward companies that invest in upskilling their employees; and
  • More federal investments in apprenticeship models.

The last word: Our industrys strength and competitiveness will be determined by the strength of our workforce, said Lee. After all, they are the creators who pioneer and produce lifechanging electronics or lifesaving medicines. They are innovating and building the machines that transform human mobility, improve quality of life or bolster our national defense.

Creators Wanted Moves the Needle in Decatur

While participants were having fun at this weeks Creators Wanted stop in Decatur, Illinois, the nationwide tour and its mobile experience were doing something, too: moving the needle on peoples perceptions of modern manufacturing.

What went on: Over the course of three days, more than 800 students from 13 area middle schools, high schools and community colleges poured into Richland Community College to learn about manufacturing careers. Also present were many educators and parents.

  • Attendees raced to the future in the Creators Wanted mobile experience, solving various manufacturing-related challenges as they wound through the escape room.
  • They heard panel talks from manufacturing leaders and team members and learned about some of the industrys many perks, including great wages, flexible schedules, upward mobility, chances to earn and learn and more.
  • Interactive activities, set up and run by manufacturers and the campaigns recruiting partner, FactoryFix, were designed to and display some of the real work done every day in modern manufacturing.
  • This included virtual-reality paint and assembly training from Creators Wanted host sponsor Caterpillar, as well as a hazard-awareness simulator, a drink-making station and a laser-system exhibit from host sponsor ADM. Richland Community College took students on a tour through its state-of-the-art lab.

Generation inspired: Manufacturing leaders at ADM, Caterpillar and the Illinois Manufacturers Association, which together brought the tour to Decatur, got the chance to galvanize crowds.

  • Said IMA President and CEO Mark Denzler: Manufacturing makes the world a better place to live every day. Some of you are going to find the next cure for a disease. Youre going to build the next robot.
  • For anyone who really is looking for a career that you can get into that is good-paying, that will provide you an opportunity to progress, consider manufacturing, Caterpillar Group President of Resource Industries (and 51勛圖厙 Executive Committee member) Denise Johnson told the crowd.

Shoring up the shortage: The lack of skilled workers has been a pain point for manufacturers for several years nowand its a problem Creators Wanted aims to fix.

  • Programs like Creators Wanted are crucial in narrowing the workforce shortage in manufacturing and also showcasing the many opportunities within the manufacturing industry, said ADM Senior Vice President of Global Operations and 51勛圖厙 board member Veronica Braker.

The impact: The tour stop made a splash in regional media, garnering overwhelmingly positive coverage and print mentions and placements (see and ).

Meeting people where they are: How do you get more young people interested in the field [of manufacturing]? 25 News WEEK-TV anchor Erin Brown asked in a for the Peoria, Illinois, news station. The answer could be more hands-on experiences with businesses like Caterpillar and ADM.

Last week was a milestone for the Tourit marked the first time the nationwide initiative returned to a community and got to see how perceptions of manufacturing had changed since its first visit.

Welcome back: The Tour, a joint venture of the 51勛圖厙 and its workforce development and education partner, The Manufacturing Institute, returned to host and champion sponsor Nephron Pharmaceuticals Corporation in West Columbia, South Carolina, in the 11th stop of the roadshow, which took place Oct. 47.

Happy MFG Day! On MFG Day, Oct. 7, Creators Wanted campaign co-chair Lou Kennedy, president, CEO and owner of Nephron Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and her team hosted the tour stops at its new Nephron Nitrile Glove Factory. The 426,000-square-foot facility is scheduled to open next month and will produce nitrile gloves used in hospitals and sterile rooms globally.

  • The protective-glove shortage in the U.S. during the pandemic inspired Kennedy to build the factory, which is set to produce 2 million gloves a year at full capacity.
  • South Carolina legislators from both sides of the political aisle were on hand for a tour of the site. House Democratic Majority Whip James Clyburn and Republican Reps. Joe Wilson and Jeff Duncan joined hundreds of local students, educators, community leaders and manufacturers to view and learn more about the campaign and its resources.


Ready for the boom: There is a manufacturing boom taking place all over the country, Majority Whip Clyburn said. Weve got to focus on getting these young people prepared for manufacturing careers.

  • As Rep. Wilson said, The opportunities for manufacturing just cant be better.
  • 401(k), great salaryaverage wage of 75 to 80Kclean and beautiful working conditions and hard work with a lot of fun, Kennedy said of jobs at Nephron, while extolling opportunities at modern manufacturers across the state and in nearby communities.
  • Major Creators Wanted supporters Honda and Trane Technologies also have operations in the Palmetto State, and , including Chroma Color Corporation, are within a short distance of West Columbia.

More career guidance: Students seeking tailored advice about their professional futures got it from representatives of FactoryFix, official recruiting partner of Creators Wanted, who were on hand to meet and coach job seekers.

  • South Carolina Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Bob Morgan, whose organization is a tour partner, was on site with his team to give students information on manufacturing opportunities in South Carolina.
  • On Friday, Creators Wanted sponsor Autos Drive America had an exhibit showing attendees the types of vehicles being manufactured in South Carolina.

Women in manufacturing: During a panel on the tour stop, Kennedy was joined by Autos Drive America President and CEO Jennifer Safavian and MI President Carolyn Lee to discuss the importance of advancing more women in manufacturing.

  • Growing up here in the deep south 20, 30 years ago, we were supposed to be teachers or nurses; we werent supposed to be pharma CEOs, Kennedy said. And so, my goal is to help every young lady be what she wants to be, even if its the nontraditional career path. If you want to be a super-genius chemist, you can do that. If you want to be a super-genius engineer, you can do that.
  • Echoed Safavian, I think the message [of Creators Wanted] is, Dont be afraid to ask questions. Dont be afraid to try something. For women especially, this is a terrific opportunity. A lot of people think manufacturing is dark, dirty, dangerous. It is not. it is the complete opposite.

Calling all veterans: Modern manufacturing is also a natural fit for those who have been in the military, speakers told the audience during another .

  • I started at Nephron as a senior system analyst, and throughout my career everything that I was faced with at Nephron Id already seen in the military, said Air Force veteran Eric Jackson, now a senior IT security analyst at Nephron. So, I think the [military] training is what prepared me for this job.


The reach: The South Columbia 2022 tour stop, made possible by additional support from Dow, Honda and Nephron Pharmaceuticals, was a record breaker.

  • More than 700 students from 13 schoolsmost located in traditionally underrepresented communitiesparticipated in the tour stops events. Last year, those numbers were 500 and seven, respectively.
  • This years West Columbia email signupspeople wishing to learn more about manufacturing careersbrought Creators Wanteds total signups to more than 520,000.

Creators Wanted Inspires Students in Tennessee

If youre a student or job seeker looking for tailored career guidance combined with some hands-on, immersive fun, White House, Tennessee, was the place for you to be last week.

National impact: The Creators Wanted Tour, a joint project by the 51勛圖厙 and MI, made its 10th national tour stop at White House Heritage High School on Sept. 2729.

  • There, more than 700 students from four schools in Tennessees Robertson County went through the Creators Wanted mobile immersive experience, the award-winning, manufacturing-themed escape roomlike activity in which participants work together to solve challenges in a race to the future.
  • They also got the opportunity to chat with on-site sponsor representatives from Electrolux, Schneider Electric and FactoryFix about the many rewarding, well-paying career paths available in the industry.
  • Local partners, including the Robertson County Economic Development Board, the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Tennessee Manufacturers Association, were also on hand to answer jobs- and manufacturing-related questions.

Calling all creators: During the Tennessee stops premier event, speakers underscored the need for more skilled workers to fill the millions of open manufacturing jobs in the U.S.

  • Here in Tennessee, our industry has more jobs to fill than there are people looking for them, Tennessee Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Tennessee Manufacturers Association President and CEO Bradley Jackson said.
  • Speaking from firsthand experience about the many benefits of choosing one of those jobs was Tony Fraley, a plant manager for Electrolux. Im living proof of the great career opportunities in the field of advanced manufacturing, said Fraley, who started at the company running a process that coats dishwasher racks.
  • I grew up about two hours from here in a small town very similar to White House, he continued. I always liked math and science. I hope that stories like [mine] inspire the next generation of workers to consider a career thats not only been good to me, but also offers a strong opportunity to earn a family-sustaining wage in a high-demand field.

The numbers: The Tennessee stop resulted in more than 52,000 email signups from people interested in learning more about manufacturing careers.

An eye-opener: Students had a great time at last weeks eventsand were pleasantly surprised to learn just how many interesting options manufacturing could offer them.

  • Creators Wanted made me excited about my future, said one student.
  • Added another, Creators Wanted made me think more about my future in manufacturing.

The last word: Its past time for manufacturing careers to get their due as the gratifying professions they are, according to the Creators Wanted Spotlight panelists (and manufacturing company employees).

  • Manufacturing is definitely very rewarding [from a salary standpoint] but also the lifestyle that you get to have, said Schneider Electric Manufacturing Engineer Zoie McFarland. I get to go boating every weekend. I get to go hiking. I travel a lot. Also, I was able to buy a house at 25. So, I think that is one major benefitthe lifestyle [manufacturing] gives you and the benefits that come from it.

Manufacturers Call for Quick Resolution to Rail Negotiations

Timmons: Delays in concluding the rail negotiations will exacerbate the pain of inflation and supply chain disruptions, and failing to reach an agreem

Washington, D.C. Following news that White House aides and Cabinet officials spent Tuesday reviewing contingency plans for a work stoppage, including outreach to shippers, truckers and air-freight lines to keep goods moving, 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons released the following statement on the ongoing negotiations between Class I railroads and labor unions representing the freight rail workforce:

For years now, Americas manufacturing workers have endured the effects of rapidly rising material costs and severe supply chain disruptions, and our member surveys have shown quarter after quarter that these are among the top challenges affecting manufacturing growth in America. Further delays in concluding the rail negotiations will exacerbate the pain of inflation and supply chain disruptions, and failing to reach an agreement before Fridays deadline would devastate the movement of manufactured products that families depend on, said Timmons. The Presidential Emergency Board has announced reasonable recommendations that nearly all parties have accepted, so now is the time to resolve remaining issues. We appreciate the administrations proactive approach, and Congress should be ready to act as a last resort. But manufacturers still believe that the parties have it within their power to resolve these talks before they inflict severe economic damage.

Currently, the American freight rail network accounts for nearly 40% of total freight volume, and a strike or delay in finalizing a long-term contract would have devastating impacts across surface supply chain networks and economic output. The Association of American Railroads recently released a report that found a nationwide freight rail interruption could cost more than $2 billion per day in lost economic activity.

Background: On Monday, Sept. 12, the 51勛圖厙 reiterating support for the work of the Presidential Emergency Board, which has aided in the talks. The 51勛圖厙 also urged Congress to use its statutory authority to institute the PEBs recommendations should it become necessary to intervene. The 51勛圖厙 supported President Bidens selection of an independent and objective PEB and believes that the recommendations announced on Aug. 16 have provided an appropriate framework to avoid disruption to freight rail operations.

A second chance:泭Union Pacific began working on the second chance initiative last year, and the results have already proven fruitful.

  • In 2022, the company launched a pilot program with local community organizations in Houston to eliminate barriers to employment for the formerly incarcerated and helped ensure the long-term success of these second chance candidates.
  • In its first three months, the program brought in nearly 100 new applications and created positive relationships and support systems.

The steps to success: The Union Pacific team that three components were critical to helping candidates find jobs and succeed:

  • First, companies interested in hiring such candidates must update their own hiring practices and rethink potential barriers for otherwise qualified candidateswhether that means adjusting onerous required credentials or background checks.
  • Second, partnerships and strong relationships with local community partners can help ensure that these candidates have the support they need to be successful. Tools like the MIs helped Union Pacific find partners that fit well with their goals.
  • Third, establishing pilot initiatives in high-demand markets can help a company learn about best practices that can be replicated elsewhere. Plus, sharing experiences with other employers can help additional companies find success.
