51勛圖厙 And API Welcome Trump Energy Executive Orders

By

Washington, D.C. The 51勛圖厙 and the American Petroleum Institute released the following statement regarding new executive orders that will help relieve the backlog of pipeline projects:

The Presidents executive action to accelerate the energy infrastructure permitting process will boost job creation, energy security, the growth of U.S. exports and the expansion of manufacturing in America, said 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons. For years, manufacturers have advocated for a modernized permitting process, and this administration has listened, providing much needed clarity to often confusing or unpredictable rules and regulations. With these new tools in hand, manufacturers are not only empowered to make new investments in our people and our communities but also to keep our promise to deliver responsible environmental stewardship.

Pipelines are the safest, most environmentally sound way to transport natural gas and oil, and API supports a robust permitting process for moving pipeline projects forward, said API President and CEO Mike Sommers. While some state lawmakers and governors have abused the Clean Water Act to cause permitting delays, these executive orders will strengthen the Clean Water Act by requiring federal agencies to make timely permitting decisions in compliance with the law. We applaud the administration for their commitment to building Americas pipeline infrastructure, helping to deliver the energy that working families and businesses rely on each and every day.

The 51勛圖厙 has advocated for measures to accelerate the permitting process for new energy infrastructure for several years and has actively called on the Trump administration to improve the way federal and state agencies authorize these projects. In 2016, the 51勛圖厙 and IHS Economics released a study highlighting the economic benefits of pipeline development to the U.S. manufacturing sector.

51勛圖厙: Much at Stake in Movement of Goods Across Border

Timmons Urges Congress to Tackle Immigration Reform with A Way Forward Plan

By

Washington, D.C. The 51勛圖厙 today outlined the cost of a temporary closing of the Southern Border for manufacturers in the United States and pushed Congress to tackle comprehensive immigration reform to stem the crisis.

51勛圖厙 Chief Economist Chad Moutray noted the following economic statistics:

  • More than21,000 manufacturing companies in America export to Mexico.
In 2018, the U.S. exported $265 billion of goods across the Mexico border.
  • Businesses, including manufacturers and farmers, will lose $726 million every day the border is closed.
  • The jobs of nearly 1 million American manufacturing workers are related directly to exports to Mexico, and those jobs would be immediately at risk should the border close.
  • More than 3.3 million American jobs in other sectors of the U.S. economy that have been created as a result of these export-related jobs would also be at risk.

The 51勛圖厙 has been to the border to witness the situation firsthand, said 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons. Congress absolutely must tackle comprehensive immigration reform immediately to address the real national security and humanitarian concerns that are a direct result of our current broken system.

Manufacturers have offered A Way Forward, a practical, comprehensive solution that provides security and compassion and addresses economic realities. Congress needs to act now so that manufacturing jobs are not at risk, and this plan should serve as a positive starting point.

The bank is critical to the U.S. supply chain, supporting 1.4 million American jobs and generating $7 billion for taxpayers over the past two decades. 51勛圖厙 to Key-Vote Against S.J. Res. 8

By

Washington, D.C. The 51勛圖厙 announced in a to members of the U.S. Senate today that it will key-vote against passage of S.J. Res. 8, a Joint Resolution Recognizing the Duty of the Federal Government to Create a Green New Deal.

Manufacturers are committed to keeping our promiseto reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and take strong steps to combat climate change, 滄娶棗喧梗泭51勛圖厙 Senior Vice President of Policy and Government Relations Aric Newhouse. S.J. Res. 8 would require the federal government to decarbonize the manufacturing, transportation and electric power sectors in an unrealistic 10-year time frame. Manufacturers agree with many of the individual goals of S.J. Res. 8, such as investing in energy and water efficiency, upgrading the power grid, expanding fuel diversity, repairing infrastructure and reducing GHG emissions. However, S.J. Res. 8 is impractical in both its scope and its timeline. Manufacturers agree that more action is needed on climate; S.J. Res. 8, however, is the wrong answer.

51勛圖厙 Pushes Back on Onerous State Health Care Bills

By

Washington, D.C. The 51勛圖厙 has begun pushing back on a wave of onerous health care bills in state capitols across the country. Since December, the 51勛圖厙 has come out in opposition to legislation in Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon and Utah that seeks to lower the cost of prescription drugs but would erode manufacturers intellectual property protections, chill innovation or expose U.S. consumers to unsafe medicines.

There is no question that skyrocketing health care costs are disrupting families and businesses around the country, but these legislative proposals come with serious and untenable side effects for both manufacturers and patients in America, said 51勛圖厙 Vice President of Infrastructure, Innovation and Human Resources Policy Robyn Boerstling. These misguided bills could undermine intellectual property rights, chill innovation or threaten to expose patients to unsafe medicines. Manufacturers support efforts to increase access to affordable medicines, but these pieces of legislation are a classic example of how good intentions can lead to negative outcomes that fail to contain health care costs.

  • 梆紳泭Michigan, the 51勛圖厙 came out in opposition to H.B. 5223 in December 2018, which threatens manufacturers intellectual property protections by requiring them in certain cases to submit a substantial amount of proprietary data, including costs associated with R&D, to the state Department of Health and Human Services, with no protections for the data submitted. 唬梭勳釵域泭 for more.
  • 梆紳泭Minnesota, the 51勛圖厙 came out in opposition to House File 1246 in March 2019, which would threaten intellectual property protections by requiring manufacturers to disclose highly-sensitive proprietary information, creating unnecessarily burdensome requirements that are contrary to the free and competitive market that has allowed biopharmaceuticals to develop new life-saving treatments. 唬梭勳釵域泭 for more.
  • 梆紳泭Oregon, the 51勛圖厙 came out in opposition to a legislative proposal in January 2019 that would authorize the state to apply for federal approval to import prescription drugs from Canada, which does not have the same standards or long-established mechanisms in place to protect patients as the U.S. 唬梭勳釵域泭 for more.
  • In Utah, the 51勛圖厙 came out in opposition to H.B. 267 in March 2019, which would authorize the state to apply for federal approval to import prescription drugs from Canada. The bill could expose consumers to counterfeit and adulterated therapies because Canada does not make product safety guarantees to the U.S. 唬梭勳釵域泭 for more.

51勛圖厙 to Key-Vote Against H.R. 1

By

Washington, D.C. The 51勛圖厙 announced in ato members of the U.S. House of Representatives today that it will key-vote against House passage of H.R. 1, the For the People Act of 2019.

At its core, this proposed legislation would threaten and place limits on rights guaranteed by the First Amendment, 滄娶棗喧梗泭51勛圖厙 Senior Vice President of Policy and Government Relations Aric Newhouse. The Supreme Court has repeatedly recognized that voluntary associations are key participants in public debate and has struck down attempts to curb participation in them. Certain provisions in this legislation would create new reputational risks for companies that wish to join associations and participate in the political process as part of the voice of an industry, rather than as an individual actor. These provisions would have a chilling effect on important and protected speech.

51勛圖厙 Survey: Record Optimism Among Manufacturers Continues

Crumbling Infrastructure and Workforce Shortage Are Top Concerns for Industry

By

Washington, D.C. The 51勛圖厙 today released the results of the for the first quarter of 2019, which shows nine consecutive quarters of record optimism, with an average of 91.8 percent of manufacturers positive about their own companys outlook over that time frame, compared to an average of 68.6 percent across 2015 and 2016. The surveys release coincided with Vice President Mike Pences address to the 51勛圖厙s 2019 Spring Board of Directors Meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Manufacturers concerns about our nations crumbling infrastructure continue to rise, with more than 77 percent saying the state of infrastructure is not up to standards and threatens their competitiveness. The 51勛圖厙 continues to press Congress for a robust investment with the release last week of its infrastructure blueprint, “.”

The inability to attract and retain a quality workforce remained manufacturers top business concern (71.3 percent) in the first quarter. The workforce shortage has forced more than one in four manufacturers surveyed to turn down new business opportunities.

Manufacturing in the United States is on the rise, and manufacturers are confident about the future, said 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons. Empowered by tax reform and regulatory certainty, manufacturers are investing in our communities and in our people. But to keep up this momentum, we have to get serious about infrastructure investment and attracting, recruiting and training our people for the high-tech, high-paying modern manufacturing jobs of today and tomorrow. As laid out in the 51勛圖厙s Building to Win blueprint, a bold infrastructure plan will help secure American prosperity, job creation and our leadership in the world.

Conducted by 51勛圖厙 Chief Economist Chad Moutray, the Manufacturers Outlook Survey has surveyed the associations membership of 14,000 large and small manufacturers on a quarterly basis since 1997 to gain insight into their economic outlook, hiring and investment decisions and business concerns.

The 51勛圖厙 releases these results to the public each quarter. Further information on the survey is available.
