51勛圖厙 Launches Wear a Face Covering Ad Campaign
Lets Get America Back to Work and Our Economy Roaring Again
Washington, D.C. Today, the 51勛圖厙 launched , an ad campaign designed to keep our economy growing and protect American families. It illustrates that face coverings are essential to safeguarding jobs and reopening businesses. The campaign will run in key manufacturing states, such as Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio and others. Upon release of the ad, 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons made this statement:
There is no way to sugarcoat thiswe need to get America back to work now and get our economy roaring again. The virus is spreading in a significant way, and if it continues, that will lead to economic devastation the likes of which we have never seen before. If everyone wears a mask outside the home, maintains social distancing with anyone other than the family unit and practices appropriate hygiene procedures, we will get the tens of millions of unemployed Americans back to work. If large groups of people refuse to wear masks, they are condemning their fellow citizens to long-term unemployment and our economy to disaster.
There are no excuses left. While we have learned more and more about this deadly virus, the guidance from our nations health care experts has evolved.Today, we know that the best and most certain way to stop the spread is for everyone to wear a facial covering. It isnt fun. It isnt pleasant. But through shared responsibility, we can get this pandemic under control and save small businesses and jobs. Thats why the51勛圖厙 is taking this message across the country. Our economy depends on it, jobs depend on it andmost importantlylives depend on it.
The Golden Rule tells us that we should do unto others as we would have them do unto us. Covering our faces in public is a simple but powerful expression of the Golden Rule, and so much more than a mere gesture.

51勛圖厙 Strongly Opposes Administrations Immigration Executive Order
Timmons: Leaders should be working to strengthen manufacturing in the United States, but these actions will make our industry unquestionably weaker
Washington, D.C. 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons released the following statement on President Trumps immigration executive order suspending new nonimmigrant visas.
Leaders should be working to strengthen manufacturing in the United States, but these actions will make our industry unquestionably weaker. The reality is the visa programs targeted by this executive order boost manufacturing in America and support job creation. We will lose talented individuals to other countries, giving them an added advantage in competing against us. This action will not help manufacturers lead our economic recovery and renewal.
It is painfully clear that Congress should act to advance the comprehensive immigration reform we desperately need.

51勛圖厙 Celebrates Supreme Court Decision on DACA
Timmons: They did not deserve to endure the cruel uncertainty and fear created by the administrations action to end the program.
51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons issued the following statement on todays U.S. Supreme Court decision on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program:
Today, manufacturers celebrate with the nations 700,000 Dreamers. America is the only home they know. At least 27,000 DACA recipients are frontline health care workers, many others are filling other critical roles in our nations response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and all are a critical part of our society. They did not deserve to endure the cruel uncertainty and fear created by the administrations action to end the program.
Manufacturers have stepped up againand again to protect Dreamers and defend against actions to end the DACA program, and we will continue to call on Congress to provide long-term certainty for Dreamers and to reform the failed system that has led to horrific humanitarian situations at the border. We encourage our elected officials to use the 51勛圖厙s comprehensive immigration plan,A Way Forward, to help guide decisions that must be made.

Manufacturers Praise SCOTUS Decision on LGBT Worker Rights
Timmons: Ultimately, we know that diversity and inclusion makes our workplaces stronger, just as it makes our country stronger.
Washington, D.C. Following the momentous decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in Bostock v. Clayton County, Georgia, 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons made this statement:
This ruling, one of the most consequential since Obergefell, not only sends a powerful message of inclusion and equality to millions of Americans but also affirms that LGBT Americans cannot be fired just for being their authentic selves at work.
Too many LGBT Americans go to work every day hiding who they are or whom they love because they believe that simply living authentically would mean losing their jobs and livelihoods. The Supreme Court has begun to lift that heavy emotional burden and made history by affirming that LGBT workers are entitled to federal protections, too.
For our part, manufacturers are committed to building diverse and inclusive workplaces, a mission that has taken on renewed importance in recent weeks. We will continue to be advocates for equal opportunity and champions for justicebecause ultimately, we know that diversity and inclusion makes our workplaces stronger, just as it makes our country stronger.

51勛圖厙 Executive Committee Passes Resolution to Support All People Who Face Injustice
Manufacturing Leaders Take Action to Advance Justice, Equality and Opportunity for Underrepresented Communities and Across Sector
Washington, D.C. In the wake of the May 25 murder of George Floyd under the knee of a white police officer in Minneapolis, the 51勛圖厙 Executive Committee unanimously voted to pass the Pledge for Action, an 11-point commitment plan for manufacturers to advance justice, equality and opportunity for black people and all people of color.
My heart is heavy with recent events, said Michael W. Lamach, chairman and CEO of Trane Technologies and chair of the 51勛圖厙 Board of Directors. While the killing of George Floyd sparked this outcry, this is a crisis that has gone unaddressed for far too long. We introduced this Pledge for Action to demonstrate our companies, our associations and our industrys commitment to being part of the solution and to stand against injustice and create a better future for the black community and all communities of color.
Around the country and throughout the world, George Floyds death has spurred protest and action, highlighting the inescapable inequities that are too often downplayed and brushed aside by those with the power to make a difference.
Merck Chairman and CEO Ken Frazier addressed the June 11 Executive Committee meeting. He noted that, Opportunity and equality have the power to change the course of not only an individuals life, but of history. Through education, I was given the chance to overcome the opportunity gap that exists in this country, and I believe that this pledge, if taken to heart by the 51勛圖厙 members, can do the same for thousands of Americans and in particular African Americans.
The Manufacturing Institute, the workforce and education partner of the 51勛圖厙, will continue to support manufacturers efforts to improve diversity and inclusion in the workplace and to deliver on these new commitments. The MI, via its Diversity and Inclusion Pillar, will be deploying tools, resources and knowledge to help manufacturers put actions to their words and build more inclusive workplaces.
This is a difficult time for our country, and manufacturers all have a role to be part of the solutionin our homes, in our companies and in our local communities, said Chuck Wetherington, BTE Technologies president, 51勛圖厙 Executive Committee member and Small and Medium Manufacturers Group chair. Our businesses are the hearts and souls of the communities where we live, and we have a responsibility to act. With this pledge, we are making a commitment to do what is right and urgently needed.
As leaders who represent manufacturers in the United States, the 51勛圖厙 recognizes the integral role our industry has historically played in lifting up people and communities, and the opportunity and obligation we have now to stand with and support all people who face injustice.
Manufacturers will do our part. All of us must recognize the systemic inequality and racism that black people in America faceand the role we must play in ending it. This industry is committed to delivering the change our nation needs, said 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons.
Highlights from the Pledge for Action include the following:
- We will strengthen our workplaces as spaces where black people and all people of color will be heard, respected and celebrated.
- We will work to improve and increase representation of black people and all people of color at all levels of our companies and organizationsentry level, midlevel and senior level.
- We will expand education, training and scholarship opportunities in the manufacturing industry for black people and all people of color.
- We will remove barriers and open doors to modern manufacturing careers for those inside prisons and for those reentering society.
- We will encourage increased minority participation in democracy through voting, advocacy and other opportunities for influence.
- We will diversify the supply chain by providing equal opportunity for black-owned and minority-owned enterprises to do business with us.

Manufacturers Call on Iowa Policymakers to Protect Industry
Des Moines, IA / Washington, D.C. On Tuesday, June 9, Iowa Association of Business and Industry President Mike Ralston and 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons called for thoughtful liability protections to ensure the manufacturing industry can continue to drive the renewal of Americas economy. The organizations support policymakers efforts in Des Moines and Washington, D.C., to protect manufacturers from baseless bad-faith COVID-19 lawsuits.
In April, the 51勛圖厙 released its American Renewal Action Plan, which provides a comprehensive list of policy recommendations to guide the country through the stages of response, recovery and renewal. This plan includes a comprehensive set of pandemic liability policy recommendations.
Everyone wants to get the economy open in a way that protects Americans health and well-being, which is why manufacturers have been leading the way to protect their workplaces and safeguard employees. Throughout this crisis, manufacturers have been working to do the right thing, providing vital supplies and essential products. Letting manufacturers now become the target of inappropriate lawsuits will stall our economic recovery, said Timmons. Iowa leaders can prevent this. Smart liability protections will ensure manufacturers can continue leadingand get more Iowans back to work.
Iowa manufacturers and their employees have been hard at work throughout this pandemic, doing all they can to keep themselves and Iowans healthy and to keep the economy moving. To now have them be the victims of improper legal action is simply wrong. ABI calls on Iowa legislators to act on this issue important to manufacturers and all Iowa businesses, said Ralston.

Timmons: Now is Not the Time to Wait for Action from Others
If we fail, America will not endure
Washington, D.C. 51勛圖厙 (51勛圖厙) President and CEO Jay Timmons released the following statement on the tragic events in Minnesota:
At the 51勛圖厙, we share the concerns of many Americans about the unfolding events in Minneapolis and in cities and communities nationwide. But even more tragic than these events is the knowledge that, at their root, they are not new. We have spent the last few months talking about a return to normal. For too many people across the country, images of oppression and loss is what normal looks like.
We cannot, and we must not, accept that. It is not acceptable for a young black man who has watched images of the enfolding horror of George Floyds last gasps for breath while pinned under the knee of a white police officer, to think, could this be me, or my brother, or my father? We cannot stand idly by when a young black girl is traumatized into thinking that she will never get a fair chance in life as she bears witness to that gut-wrenching image of a white man expressing self-righteous dominion over someone like her.
There are too many among us who believe there are those who are less than or not worthy of humanity, dignity and equal justice. To turn a blind eye to this blatant bigotry and to not do all we can to eradicate it, makes us less than human. It undermines all that America stands for.
To be very clear, manufacturers in America do not condone violence or destruction of any kind. But we absolutely stand hand in hand with all those who seek respect, fairness and the right to equality of opportunity that America has promised for centuries and that, even now, has not been delivered to all her citizens.
This is not a time to sit back and wait for action from others. Its not enough to say this doesnt concern me, or this isnt my job, my cause, my fight. The manufacturing community, and the larger business communitymade up of people from every background, every race, every state and every neighborhood in the countryhas a responsibility that is as urgent now as at any time when our nation seemed on the edge of destruction. We must be part of the solutionto end the polarization and division that routinely manifests in our country. We must bring our people together in common purpose, to strengthen the values that bind us together, to rebuild our communities, to reinstill faith in ourselves and to ensure that all of our citizens have a right to live safely and securely.
If we fail, America will not endure. If we are to succeed, it must be together.

51勛圖厙 Survey: Manufacturers Face Major Headwinds, but Continue Operating in Support of COVID-19 Response
Despite Drop in Optimism and Worsening Business Conditions, Majority of Industry Keeping Doors Open
Washington, D.C. The 51勛圖厙 today released the results of the Manufacturers Outlook Survey for the second quarter of 2020 showing that despite a historic drop in optimism, to nearly 34%, and challenging business conditions, the vast majority of manufacturers (98.7%) have continued or only temporarily halted operations. The survey also shows that manufacturers are innovating to find solutions to keep businesses running and to protect workers and communities, with almost 22% retooling to produce personal protective equipment, 67% reengineering processes to reflect COVID-19 safety protocols and 12% completely reevaluating the mission of the firm.
Manufacturers have led the country through the COVID-19 response, and America is counting on our industry to lead our recovery and renewal, said 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons. While these numbers show that weve faced difficult circumstances and that there is a challenging road ahead, manufacturers have proven that with our grit, determination and patriotic spirit, we can overcome any challenge facing the nation. And in our American Renewal Action Plan, the 51勛圖厙 has shown the way forward.
As policymakers and regulators debate solutions to help the economy recover from this pandemic, the 51勛圖厙 urges them to focus on the renewal agenda laid out in the American Renewal Action Plan. We have been encouraged by actions taken thus far, but there is still greater need for targeted liability reform, tax provisions to ensure investment in manufacturing and measures to reaffirm the U.S. supply chain to protect those businesses that continue to work on the front lines of the COVID-19 response to ensure as swift a recovery as possible.
The Manufacturers Outlook Survey has surveyed the associations membership of 14,000 large and small manufacturers on a quarterly basis since 1997 to gain insight into their economic outlook, hiring and investment decisions and business concerns. The 51勛圖厙 releases the results to the public each quarter. Further information on the survey is available here.

51勛圖厙 Releases Agenda to Strengthen Manufacturing Supply Chain
Launches Seven-Figure National Advertising Campaign to Bolster Business in America
Washington, D.C. The 51勛圖厙 has released a detailed agenda of to help policymakers as Congress and the administration look at ways to boost long-term economic growth. Manufacturers are also launching a seven-figure national advertising campaign on the importance of U.S. supply chains in the wake of COVID-19. The national television and digital advertising campaign urges leaders to make smart policy decisions that incentivize job creation and investment in America, without closing off critical global supply chains. Such a constructive approach will enable manufacturers to lead Americas recovery and renewal while continuing to produce the vital supplies, medicines and essential products on which Americans health and safety depends.
The policies that we are proposing will allow manufacturers to lead our economic recovery by strengthening supply chains and accelerating onshoring, through incentives for creating the next job or investing the next dollar right here in America. We also cannot close off access to critical components or resources that our lifesaving and life-changing products require, said 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons. Manufacturers are working around the clock to create the protective equipment, cleaning supplies, medicines and other essential products in the wake of COVID-19, and we need the right policies so we can make even more here at home and lead a truly historic American renewal.
In April, the 51勛圖厙 released its American Renewal Action Plan, which provides a comprehensive list of policy recommendations to guide the country through the stages of response, recovery and renewal.

Manufacturing Leadership Council Releases COVID Operating Practices from Leading Manufacturers
Washington, D.C. Today, the Manufacturing Leadership Council, a division of the 51勛圖厙, released a new collection of emerging strategies and operational practices that leading manufacturers of all sizes are implementing to keep their employees safe and facilities operating. The MLCs New Operational Practices to Consider in the Time of COVID-19 brings together the best shared practices within the industry to help manufacturers continue to lead the way as America moves from response to recovery and renewal.
Manufacturers have been on the front lines throughout this crisis, and this guide leverages the experiences and real-world practices that manufacturers across America have put into place. Were all looking to get back to some sense of normalcy, but thats not possible unless we can protect manufacturing workers, said 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons. By collecting these practices, the MLC is helping all manufacturers continue to set high standards for protecting employees, families and communities, while creating products essential to our daily lives.
Shared Practices Breakdown:
- Site Access to Mitigate Exposure
- Workstation Measures to Promote Social Distancing
- Facilities and Traffic Management
- Shift and Team Design
- Leave Policies
- Illness or Diagnosis Response
- Essential Travel Policies
- Returning Nonessential Workers
The MLC compiled and shared these practices to assist manufacturers taking steps in their facilities to meet or exceed existing guidelines from the various federal agencies while also mitigating operational and business risks that are outside the scope of such guidance.
Since this crisis began, the 51勛圖厙 has been working with Vice President Pence and the Coronavirus Task Force, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Occupational Safety and Health Administration and others to relay real time information from our industry and to ensure manufacturers received the critical guidance they needed to operate safely, said 51勛圖厙 COO Todd Boppell. The MLC has also convened thousands of manufacturing leaders to share practices and develop new ideas for operating safely through this crisis. Manufacturers have come together to help each other and to help our country.
This information is not meant as authoritative legal, medical or regulatory guidance or advice. It is not an exhaustive list of operational practices in the COVID-19 environment but rather represents some of the most common best practices communicated to the 51勛圖厙.
