Creators Wanted Kicks Off Virtual Campaign

Creators Wanted, the pioneering workforce initiative from the 51勛圖厙 and MI, is adapting to the changing environment to continue its critical work to reduce the skills gap and end misperceptions about modern manufacturing.
Whats happening: Weve gone virtual! The 51勛圖厙 and MI are still doing the Creators Wanted Tour, but they have exchanged in-person experiences for virtual ones (at least for now). The upside: these events will now be accessible to many more people.
Whats the plan: Were kicking off our first virtual event on Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 10:00 a.m. EST. It will give you a sneak preview of what to expect during our Creators Wanted virtual events this year.(Click for more information and to register.) After that, the 51勛圖厙 and MI will be making their way across the country, with virtual events aimed at different geographical areas.
Whats new and important:
- The 51勛圖厙with the MIs support and leadershiphas launched the Its a commitment by manufacturers to take real, tangible steps to reflect the diversity of the U.S. workforce over the next decade. Taking the Pledge and supporting Creators Wanted are great ways for manufacturers to help close the opportunity gap.
- Were collecting stories of creators around the country! Tell us about an amazing creator you know by visiting.
Whos it for: Everyone! Well, we wouldnt mind if everyone heard our message, said 51勛圖厙 Vice President of Brand Strategy Chrys Kefalas. But the 51勛圖厙 and MI specifically want to reach out to people who are ready to explore a career in manufacturing now. Maybe theyve lost a job in the pandemic and are looking for a new career, or perhaps theyre already involved in manufacturing but want to gain the skills that will take them to the next level.
- The 51勛圖厙 and MI also want to reach veterans andpeople who are underrepresented in manufacturing, including women, Black people and all communities of color.
- And, of course, the initiative intends to connect with young people, the next generation of creators.
Picking up where we left off: The 51勛圖厙 and MI set big goals with Creators Wanted in 2020to improve perceptions of manufacturing, reduce the skills gap and get more people into manufacturing career paths, said Kefalas. On Feb. 2, we will demonstrate that we can hit these goals with a new combination of virtual events, digital experiences and eventually in-person activations.
But thats not all…The event will cover how were going to expand our impact, as well as exceed sponsor expectations. You wont want to miss it.
The Story Behind This Is Our Shot

The 51勛圖厙 and The Manufacturing Institute have launched a large-scale project to promote vaccination among manufacturing workers and communities, called This Is Our Shot.
As 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons describes it, This project builds on our months of work advocating the use of face masks and other smart health measures to protect all Americans . . . . Now is our opportunity as a country to end this pandemic. Our future depends on all of us rolling up our sleeves and getting armed against COVID-19.
So how did they make it happen? We recently talked to 51勛圖厙 Vice President of Brand Strategy Chrys Kefalas about the inside story.
Why: As Kefalas puts it, We have a crisis. Depending on which study you look at, between 30% to 40% of Americans say they will not get a COVID-19 vaccine. We have to take direct aim now at vaccine hesitancy; otherwise, well have safe and effective vaccines and not enough people willing to get them to reach heard immunity.
Why the 51勛圖厙 and the MI? The 51勛圖厙, along with its workforce development and education partner, the MI, has a singular power to leverage manufacturings unifying position as a trusted community resource, Kefalas explains.
How: In the spirit of manufacturers everywhere, lets take a look at how this project got made.
- First, the research: Weve relied on a wide range of suggestions and guidance, from manufacturers of all sizes and all sectors. Weve also sought recommendations from the Gates Foundation, the CDC and other public health leaders, says Kefalas.
- Second, the reach: Were engaging company medical officers, local health care providers and community members who can change hearts and minds about COVID-19 vaccination.
- Third, the sights: Its going to take videos, photos, flyers, posters, emailsand other very visible signs that others are getting armed against COVID-19.
- Fourth, the psychology: Research shows that a sense of group loyalty or patriotism can boost vaccination numbers, Kefalas explains. To create that sense of solidarity (and social influence), the 51勛圖厙 and MI will distribute red and yellow ribbon pins for those who get vaccinatedand encourage people to put up red and yellow ribbons outside their homes once their whole households have received the vaccine.
What can you do? The initiative is providing manufacturers with communications materials to share with their teams. As Kefalas says, clear, consistent and direct communication from employers and peers really helps. And when you are conveying medical information, rely on the experts like medical officers and direct people to their medical providers, Kefalas suggests.
All we need is love: In case you missed it, the first video in this initiative dropped yesterday, a charming short called . Kefalas explains the idea: Caring for others is really the one message that seemed to resonate across all demographic groups. Vaccinations should be really simple, because it comes down to one thing: we want to protect the people we love. You can’t say it any better than that.
Manufacturing Associations Are Stronger Together

The 51勛圖厙s most effective allies arent just manufacturers themselves, but other manufacturing associations as well. And the strength of those alliances was on full display this month, as the 51勛圖厙s Council of Manufacturing Associations hosted its first virtual Winter Leadership Conference.
Despite the limitations of the pandemic, a record showing of association leaders turned out to discuss the future of the industry. Heres a look at what they did.
The background: With a membership of 250 national manufacturing associations representing 130,000 companies worldwide, the CMA creates partnerships across the industry and amplifies manufacturers voices. Its the place to be if you want to connect with association CEOs, senior staff executives, experts and decision makers of all kinds.
A meeting of leaders: Here are some of the highlights of the CMA conference, which showcased the incredible network of leaders that the 51勛圖厙 has built up.
- Leading in the Midst of Uncertainty: 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons spoke to Biotechnology Innovation Organization President and CEO Dr. Michelle McMurry-Heath about the pharmaceutical industrys role in vaccine development during a year unlike any other.
- The Changing Geopolitical Landscape: Retired U.S. Army General Stanley McChrystal chatted with Steel Manufacturers Association President Philip Bell about how changes in foreign policy will alter the way manufacturers work.
- Rising to the Occasion: Timmons and Stephen Ubl, president and CEO of Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), spoke about what manufacturers have done to combat COVID-19 and how they will protect the supply chain that is critical to vaccine delivery.
- An Economic Forecast: 51勛圖厙 Chief Economist Chad Moutray spoke about what manufacturers can expect in 2021, as well as what the new normal might look like.
The conference also featured smaller discussions among association executives on topics such as Recruiting in a COVID-19 Environment; Planning, Promoting and Producing Online Experiences; The Digital Transformation; and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. In addition, leaders discussed how they can collaborate to advance manufacturers policy priorities with the new Congress and administration.
New leadership: The CMA announced new leadership at the conference as well. Robb MacKie, president and CEO of the American Bakers Association, will serve as the new CMA chair, and Bell will serve as CMA vice chair.
CMA Leadership Award: Every year, the CMA recognizes the association leader who has done the most to advance and expand this influential network. This year the award went to Steve Caldeira, president and CEO of the Household & Commercial Products Association.
- As Timmons said about Caldeira, Steve has been a powerful force for CMA recruitment and retention. Hes convened his peers and colleagues in timely CMA discussions . . . [and has] been an indispensable voice for the CMA among the broader association community.
The last word: As Timmons put it in his opening remarks, Our country needs real leaders right now. It needs people who will speak truth and bring light into darkness. And the business community has to provide that leadership.
President Biden Gets to Work, and the 51勛圖厙 Responds

As President Joe Biden took office yesterday, the 51勛圖厙 took a pragmatic stance, calling this new political era a time for healing. As 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons put it, Today, manufacturers recommit ourselves to be part of the solutionto be part of the healing process. We invite all Americans to join us in doing the same.
And since the new president started his first day with the 51勛圖厙 responded to those, too. Heres a rundown of the new policies, plus the 51勛圖厙s statements.
Immigration: While also moving to reverse a ban on immigration from certain Muslim-majority countries, President Biden strengthened the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, offering support to the so-called Dreamers. He called on Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform that provides Dreamers with permanent status and a path to citizenship.
- Responding to the DACA action, Timmons said, Manufacturers are very encouraged by todays critical first step. . . . The broad goals of the Biden plan align with many of the core recommendations in A Way Forward, manufacturers post-partisan roadmap for immigration reform. The path we have laid out is one that we believe can bring the country together, and we look forward to working with the Biden administration to move a comprehensive immigration reform plan through Congress.
Keystone XL: President Biden also rescinded the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline, at least temporarily erecting a barrier to its progress.
- Manufacturers are disappointed with the administrations decision to block this sustainable project, which can serve as a model for infrastructure of the future, and if not reconsidered, represents a missed opportunity for manufacturing workers in America, Timmons. Manufacturers have a strong commitment to responsible environmental stewardship, and protecting our environment does not require us to walk away from his job-creating opportunity.
COVID-19: Ten executive orders focused on combating the COVID-19 pandemic, according to . The 51勛圖厙 had called for aggressive actions to support manufacturers COVID-19 response months ago, including in its April American Renewal Action Plan and, mostly recently, in conversations with the transition team.
- The orders included a new COVID-19 response office as well as a pandemic supply chain resilience strategy to help strengthen domestic production of important supplies.
- President Biden also restored U.S. membership in the World Health Organization and directed agencies to use the Defense Production Act to spur production of critical materials like N95 masks, swabs and other vaccine- and virus-related equipment.
Its very encouraging to see [President Biden] is starting off with strong, decisive action to fight COVID-19, save lives and get our economy on the road to recovery, said Timmons on . Manufacturers are committed to ending this deadly pandemic.
Masks on: One of President Bidens orders will now require masks to be worn on federal property, and he plans to require masks on public transportation as well. The 51勛圖厙 has prioritized face coverings since the beginning of the pandemic, including by launching a Wear a Face Covering ad campaign and providing a crucial estimate of how many masks American businesses need.
- President Joe Biden is showing real leadership with his executive orders on masks, Timmons. Masks save lives, help us keep our economy open and are vital until we can all get vaccinated.
What Can President Biden Do for Manufacturers?

The new presidents actions on his first day included some policies that the 51勛圖厙 endorsed and some it didnt. But thanks to a longstanding and warm relationship with President Biden, the 51勛圖厙 is looking forward to productive conversations with the new administration.
Those conversations now center on a list of executive orders that 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons sent to the transition teamsome of which manufacturers support, some of which they want overturned.
Two main ideas: First, the 51勛圖厙 advocated policies that support manufacturing growth in the United States, including some that the previous administration had already put into place.
Second, the 51勛圖厙 advised President Biden to get rid of some policies that violated manufacturers most important values, such as individual liberty and equal opportunity.
Whats on the agenda? Here are some of the changes the 51勛圖厙 proposed:
- Already done: President Biden took action on three EOs yesterday in accordance with the 51勛圖厙s recommendations. He reversed the ban on immigrants from certain Muslim-majority countries and took steps to provide certainty under the DACA program to people brought to the U.S. as children. In addition, he moved to reverse the ban on diversity trainings.
Here are a few more 51勛圖厙 recommendations that President Biden has not yet acted on:
- Increasing the number of refugees offered admission to the U.S.a key component of the compassionate immigration policy that the 51勛圖厙 has long promoted.
- Reversing the Trump administrations restriction of nonimmigrant visas, which is hurting manufacturers ability to recover from the pandemic.
And here are some policies and programs the 51勛圖厙 is asking President Biden to maintain:
- The Presidential Advisory Council on Infrastructure, a crucial instrument for enacting the reforms that manufacturers need.
- The American Workforce Policy Advisory Board, whose members include Timmons. The Board has brought public- and private-sector leaders together to address manufacturers greatest long-term problem: the shortage of skilled workers.
- The Trump administrations focus on eliminating counterfeits.
The last word: As Timmons put it in his letter to the transition team, For decades, we have worked with policymakers from across the ideological spectrum to craft policies that encourage the growth of manufacturing in the United States. Now more than ever, America needs leaders in Washington who are focused on increasing American jobs, wages and investment.
You can read the full list of policy recommendations here.
51勛圖厙 Reinforces Climate Priorities

As a new administration and Congress begin their terms in Washington, the 51勛圖厙 is reminding policymakers that manufacturers work hard to safeguard our environment. A longtime advocate of climate policies that promote manufacturing jobs in America, the 51勛圖厙 has now compiled its recommendations in a paper called The Promise Ahead.
The big idea: Climate change is a global problem that requires a global solution, which is why its critical for the United States to work in tandem with other countries. And while all nations need to be involved in promoting climate action, there should also be room for the kind of science-led innovation that American manufacturers have already demonstrated and will continue to provide.
- As it says in the paper, Manufacturing holds the key to solving this global challenge. Think about the technologies that will get us there. Clean energy. Carbon capture. Batteries. Microgrids. Efficiency. Advanced vehicles. Manufacturers make these products and technologies and will continue to invent new ones.
A push for global action: The plan recommends negotiating and ratifying a binding international climate action treaty that is both fair and enforceable, a position the 51勛圖厙 has long held. This will ensure that the United States does not suffer a competitive disadvantage and can lead the way in developing job-creating technologies and products.
A roadmap for results: The plan also offers guidelines for a national approach to climate change, adhering to three core principles that have always guided the 51勛圖厙s climate strategy:
- One unified policy: Instead of the patchwork of federal, state and local climate change regulations that manufacturers currently face, the industry needs a clear federal policy that offers predictability, consistency and certainty while meeting science-based targets. Businesses should be able to plan for the futureand shouldnt have to worry that the policies of today will be different tomorrow.
- A level playing field: Any national policy to address emissions should be economy-wide and apply to all emitters. Congress should develop plans that dont unduly burden one sector over another, and manufacturers shouldnt be expected to shoulder the already-high cost of new regulations alone.
- Consumer choice and competitiveness: This policy approach shouldnt automatically involve a mandated phaseout of any manufactured product. Instead, policymakers should lead with the tools and strategies manufacturers need to improve products, preserving consumer choice and supporting the innovation that manufacturing provides.
Immediate actions: The blueprint also offers some bipartisan actions that could be taken now and reduce emissions immediately. These proposals include the following:
- Investing in energy and water efficiency
- Funding and expanding climate and clean energy R&D programs
- Paving the way for a smart grid
- Commercializing and deploying carbon capture, utilization and storage technology
- Ratifying the Kigali Amendment, which sets a global path for phasing down HFCs
The last word: Its remarkable to see the commitments manufacturers are making to the health of our communities, our country and our worldwhich is why we have consistently led the drive for climate innovation, said 51勛圖厙 Vice President of Energy and Resources Policy Rachel Jones. We need a national and international approach that unleashes our efforts. Our plan is designed to create a rallying point for that approach and spur sustainable economic and environmental progress.
51勛圖厙 Celebrates Climate Win on Reducing Pollutants

It was hard to focus on any one policy in Congresss enormous, year-end funding effort, but one deserves more press than it got at the time. Thats the bipartisan legislation that will reduce harmful refrigerantsa major climate victory, and one that the 51勛圖厙 was instrumental in achieving, according to (subscription).
Good for climate: The legislation, which was co-sponsored by Republican Sen. John Kennedy (LA) and Democratic Sen. Tom Carper (DE), will help the U.S. avoid more greenhouse gas emissions every year than Germany produces in total, bringing the United States into alignment with a global deal called the Kigali Amendment. The Kigali Amendment seeks to phase down superheating pollutants like hydrofluorocarbons to prevent Earths temperatures from increasing by a half-degree Celsius by the end of the century.
Good for business: The deal to phase down HFCs will also benefit manufacturers in the United States who are producing greener alternatives to HFCs.
51勛圖厙s efforts: When the legislation ran into roadblocks in the Senate, the 51勛圖厙 worked alongside members and the business community to educate lawmakers and move the process forward.
- It took a lot of late-night phone calls, 51勛圖厙 Vice President of Energy and Resources Policy Rachel Jones told E&E News. I dont think theres any one person or organization that can or should claim credit. This really only worked because people were willing to build the bridge from both sides of the river.
The results: The legislation, which was ultimately included in the year-end omnibus bill that Congress passed in December, will cut HFCs by 85% over 15 years, while providing exemptions for specialty applications without viable alternatives.
The word from the 51勛圖厙: You dont accomplish big things alone, Jones tells us. House and Senate staffers did yeomans work behind the scenes to hammer out a deal. Sister trade associations like AHRI and the Alliance for Responsible Atmospheric Policy were smart to partner with the Natural Resources Defense Council from the start.
Key member companies, including Honeywell, Chemours, Rheem and Trane (whose CEO is the 51勛圖厙s chairman), worked tirelessly with both sides of the aisle to build support. They emphasized to policymakers that the phasedown in HFCs would lower the global temperature while also ensuring manufacturers in America maintain their global leadership.
How 51勛圖厙 Cyber Cover Helps Manufacturers

Cyberspace seems to get more dangerous every day. The latest scare comes from the likely Russian of tech company SolarWinds software, which affected several U.S. government agencies along with major corporations. But manufacturers can give themselves some peace of mind by investing proactively in security measuressuch as cyber insurance.
One industry executive is very happy with his decision to buy cyber coverage from the 51勛圖厙 to protect his company. After its sister company was attacked in a cyber incident, Manitoba Corporation’s Partner and Vice President of Marketing Adam Shine shopped around for plans that would safeguard the family-run metal recycling business based in New York. After considering his options, Shine signed up with because it offered proactive protection in addition to coverage, tailored to manufacturers at a competitive price.
I think the 51勛圖厙 has done a good job of providing value for money, so its not like youre just writing a check for cyber insurance on an if-come basis, said Shine. Youre actually signing up for some user training and some tools that will help you mitigate that risk.
What it is: 51勛圖厙 Cyber Cover is a cybersecurity and risk-mitigation program developed exclusively for the 51勛圖厙s member companies and organizations in partnership with AHT Insurance and Coalition, which specializes in underwriting cyber and technology insurance.
What it offers: Cyber Cover presents a range of benefits for manufacturers seeking to secure themselves against cyber intrusions, allowing them to:
- Manage risks through a free Cyber Risk Assessment, as well as gain access to threat monitoring and vulnerability alerts;
- Mitigate the severity of intrusions with training platforms and programs that help employees recognize issues, while also working with ethical hackers to identify vulnerabilities;
- Receive 24-hour-a-day coverage from Cyber Cover support; and
- Recover from an attack with instant support that helps manufacturers survive and rebuild after a breach.
The word from Manitoba: Speaking from experience, dont think it cant happen to you, said Shine. [Cyber attackers are] targeting every company from every walk of life. To know that you have coverage and a safety net is critical. I would highly advise everybody now to have cyber coverage.
The word from the 51勛圖厙: Modern manufacturers are deploying advanced technologies that are transforming what we make and how we make it. This rapid digitization and the workplace disruptions created by the COVID-19 pandemic have created new and unprecedented risks for our members, said 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons. Our partnership with AHT and Coalition will help protect our industry from cyberattacks and ensure we can continue to lead our economic recovery and renewal.
Watch this with Shine about his experience, and take a look at what Cyber Cover offers .
Mobs Attack Capitol and the 51勛圖厙 Responds

As the whole world already knows, a mob seeking to thwart the certification of the U.S. presidential election overwhelmed police and broke into the Capitol building yesterday, forcing the evacuation of Congress and Vice President Mike Pence. Here are some stories to get you up to speed quickly.
Trumps actions: The Wall Street Journal (subscription) has a of the horrifying events, including the outgoing presidents actions. After goading the insurrectionists to action throughout the day and attacking Vice President Pence for refusing to overturn the election results, President Donald Trump eventually released a video in which he issued a half-hearted call for peace while telling the mob, We love you. Twitter and Facebook both temporarily locked his social media accounts.
Democrats respond: Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who is slated to be the next Senate majority leader, for the removal of President Trump. Other lawmakers have also called for his removal.
- “The quickest and most effective wayit can be done todayto remove this president from office would be for the Vice President to immediately invoke the 25th amendment. If the Vice President and the Cabinet refuse to stand up, Congress should reconvene to impeach the president,” said Schumer.
Republicans respond: Some senior Trump officials have resigned, including Special U.S. Envoy to Northern Ireland Mick Mulvaney, who previously served as White House chief of staff.
- In an interview this morning, Mulvaney CNBC: We didnt sign up for what you saw last night. We signed up for making America great again; we signed up for lower taxes and less regulation. The president has a long list of successes that we can be proud of. But all of that went away yesterday.
Other officials are considering resigning, to The Washington Post (subscription), while some have also proposed invoking the 25th Amendment.
Businesses respond: Businesses and trade associations strongly condemned the rioters and President Trump, according to . Business leaders nationwide demanded that elected leaders, including the president, call for an end to violence and support the peaceful transfer of power.
- These were destructive acts against our shared principles and beliefs of apeaceful transition of power, said Ford Motor Company CEO Jim Farley.Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff said, Our leaders must call for peace and unity.
The 51勛圖厙s call: The 51勛圖厙 led the business community in a statement condemning the assault on American democracy. It urged our leaders to seriously consider next steps and reiterated its call for an orderly transition. 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons said:
- Throughout this whole disgusting episode, Trump has been cheered on by members of his own party, adding fuel to the distrust that has enflamed violent anger. This is not law and order. This is chaos. It is mob rule. It is dangerous. This is sedition and should be treated as such.
- Vice President Pence, who was evacuated from the Capitol, should seriously consider working with the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to preserve democracy.
Read the full statement .
The bottom line: The 51勛圖厙 is committed to the millions of men and women who make things in America, and who have helped build a country that offers opportunity and freedom for all. The United States cannot functionas a nation or as a peoplewithout respect for the rule of law and the ties that bind us together. Those who lead us must be especially strong in their support for our sacred institutionsor the country will not survive.
Manufacturers Await Possible COVID-19 Regulations

The 51勛圖厙 is preparing manufacturers for a possible Emergency Temporary Standard that could be issued at the outset of the Biden administration.
What it is: An ETS is a set of mandatory rules and regulations for employers, issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Department of Labor.
What its for: An ETS would be intended to protect the health and safety of workers. While manufacturers are encouraged to follow CDC guidance as they develop and implement their own tailored plans to protect against COVID-19, an ETS could impose compulsory requirements on manufacturing operations, HR departments and safety protocols.
What it includes: Theres no concrete information yet about the text of an ETS, but possible new requirements for manufacturers might include:
- Written plans for stopping the spread of COVID-19;
- A comprehensive assessment of COVID-19 hazards throughout the workplace and a clear plan for diminishing or eliminating those hazards;
- Expanded definitions of terms like positive COVID-19 case, high-risk exposure period and physical distancing;
- Requirements that employees are tested for COVID-19 in some scenarios and paid for the time spent taking tests;
- Increased recordkeeping and reporting on safety procedures; and
- Additional requirements for employees to receive paid leave and testing.
What were doing: The 51勛圖厙 has already begun its outreach to the incoming Biden administration to discuss the workplace investments, increased safety protocols and best practices that manufacturers have implemented during the pandemic.
- As part of those conversations, the 51勛圖厙 will also make sure the incoming administration understands the impact of an ETS on vaccine and therapeutics production, supply chains and other essential manufacturing operations.
- It will also educate 51勛圖厙 members via webinars, direct outreach and labor and employment updates so they can be prepared for any changes.
The last word: Manufacturers are playing a critical role in fighting this pandemic, even as they go above and beyond to support the health and safety of their employees, said 51勛圖厙 Director of Labor and Employment Policy Drew Schneider.
The 51勛圖厙 will never stop working to ensure manufacturers have the tools and support they need to take on that challenge. And we will make sure that the incoming administration, the Labor Department and OSHA have the best possible information about how their actions impact the manufacturing industry and the nation.
