Resolution Copper, Arizona Town Sign Landmark Water Agreement

Resolution Copper struck a $20 million-plus deal with the town of Superior, Arizona, to shore up water flow and restore vegetation in an unusually dry creek ().

  • Rio Tinto, the majority owner of Resolution Copper, is building a mine near Superior.

Whats going on: The historic water mitigation package, the first of its kind in the state, will restore flows in Queen Creek, remove debris and invasive vegetation, improve the ability to capture and return water to the creek and establish a $5 million endowment to fund long-term water projects throughout the Queen Creek watershed.

  • The water will come from multiple sources, including underground and wells previously used to supply farms.
  • Water in the creek, which is typically dry 10 months of the year, is expected to start flowing in three to six months.

Why its being done: This historic agreement reflects our commitment to being a responsible neighbor and partner to Superior, said Resolution Copper President and General Manager Vicky Peacey in a .

  • Many Resolution Copper employees call Superior home, and weve worked closely with the town to develop solutions that are practical, sustainable and focused on long-term benefits. The investment is about supporting the community, protecting water resources and building a strong future together.
