Manufacturers: Climate Disclosures Must Be Tailored and Targeted

Washington, D.C. Following the release of a proposed rule by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on climate disclosures, 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons released the following statement:

Manufacturers support key disclosures related to publicly traded companies climate strategies, as this information can help shareholders make informed decisions. However, broad, sweeping disclosures could be counterproductiverequiring manufacturers to waste time and resources reporting irrelevant information that will not be decision-useful for shareholders. The SEC should focus on requiring disclosure of material information, and the 51勛圖厙 looks forward to working with the SEC to ensure that its proposed climate reporting rule enables smart, company-specific disclosures that are tailored and targeted.

Manufacturers are proudly leading on climate solutions. After all, it is manufacturers that make the products and technologies needed to face this generational challengeclean energy, carbon capture, batteries, microgrids, advanced vehicles and more. And through our policy proposal, The Promise Ahead, the 51勛圖厙 has offered lawmakers a guide for achieving climate solutions alongside economic growth. Especially at this time of global turbulence and supply chain disruptions, our actions must allow for an all-of-the-above approach to safeguarding Americas energy security.

Manufacturers Urge Caution on EPA Good Neighbor Plan

51勛圖厙: While the intent of this proposal is right and one that we share, it could have significant effects on American families

Washington, D.C. Following the Environmental Protection Agencys release of its Good Neighbor Plan to expand regulation of interstate transport of air emissions that affect downwind states ability to attain and maintain National Ambient Air Quality Standards, 51勛圖厙 Senior Vice President of Policy and Government Relations Aric Newhouse released the following statement:

Manufacturers are committed to clean air and healthy communities. We have taken the initiative to operate in cleaner, more sustainable ways, and we are proud of our record. Our Promise Ahead proposal offers numerous ideas on how we can continue to improve our environment and address climate change.

While the intent of this proposal is right and one that we share, it could have significant effects on American families if not thoughtfully implemented. At a time when our supply chains are snarled, inflation is skyrocketing and Russias war on Ukraine continues, we must be careful with regulations that could further raise prices on all Americans, slow economic growth and threaten jobs.

We will work with the EPA to ensure these new rules can achieve shared goals in a constructive way that will not have unintended consequences and ripple effects throughout our economy and communities. We look forward to sharing our innovation, technology and supply chain expertise to do so.

Manufacturers Reject Political Ploy Geared Toward U.S. Energy Companies

Geared Toward U.S. Energy Companies Timmons: Policymakers should be singularly focused on saving the people of Ukraine

Washington, D.C. Following Sen. Elizabeth Warrens (D-MA) calls for a new tax targeting Americas energy companies shortly after the new sanctions on Russian energy imports, 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons released the following statement:

Our country is sacrificing to save the Ukrainian people, and this is a blatant political ploy to exploit a crisis to enact an extremist agenda. American policymakers should be singularly focused on saving the people of Ukraine and ending a dictators expansionist ambitions, instead of attacking American businesses that are doing all we can to support our governments efforts to bring about peace.

Manufacturers United in Support of Ukrainian People

51勛圖厙 Board Denounces Russian Aggression; Supports Sanctions, Calls for WTO Removal

Washington, D.C. 泭In the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the 51勛圖厙 Board of Directors unanimously voted to denounce Russias invasion of Ukraine and to stand with the people of Ukraine in their fight to preserve freedom and independence. The resolution expressed support for the economic and financial sanctions implemented against Russia and called for the removal of the Russian Federation from the World Trade Organization and termination of permanent normalized trading relationship status with the United States.

Manufacturers have a proud history of standing firm in support of democracy, and we stand with the Ukrainian people. The free world must come together to denounce the unprovoked Russian aggression, save lives and end the humanitarian crisis unfolding before our eyes, said 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons. Ending the conflict is also critical to protecting livelihoods in America and around the world. Manufacturers are already feeling the serious economic disruption, which jeopardizes the jobs of Americas manufacturing workers.

The 51勛圖厙 supports the efforts of the Biden administration and bipartisan congressional leaders to sanction Russia, and we support further economic sanctions.

The 51勛圖厙 Board is speaking clearly today to support the bipartisan effort to hold Russia accountable and bring peace to Ukraine, while reaffirming our commitment to safeguarding democracy and democratic institutions not only here at home, but also abroad.

Resolution: Whereas Ukraine is a sovereign democracy and constitutional republic that was invaded in an unprovoked act of aggression ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin;

Whereas the unrelenting attacks on humanity have caused needless loss of life, unacceptable human suffering, a devastating refugee crisis, widespread destruction and significant economic disruption;

Whereas manufacturers in America have a proud history of supporting and defending democracy, including serving as the Arsenal of Democracy and mobilizing to free the world from tyranny and fascism in two world wars;

Whereas the Ukrainian people are standing strong against a violent aggressor, and their future is directly dependent upon the united actions of the free world and those who revere democracy;

Whereas the failure to end this aggression could have profound global ramifications, including further attacks on other democracies and destabilizing effects in Europe and around the world, as Russia continues its ambitious expansionism;

Whereas the continued disruption of global commerce harms manufacturers in America and the industrys stability, threatens our ability to deliver essential products for the American people and the world and thereby jeopardizes the jobs of American manufacturing workers; and

Whereas the 51勛圖厙 advances the values of free enterprise, competitiveness, individual liberty and equal opportunity, as enshrined by this board in our policy documents, and those values cannot flourish in the absence of democracy;

Be it resolved that the Board of Directors of the 51勛圖厙, at its March 8, 2022, meeting, joins world leaders in denouncing Russias invasion of Ukraine; stands with the people of Ukraine in their fight to preserve freedom and independence; supports the economic and financial sanctions implemented against Russia; supports additional economic sanctions, including a ban on the importation of energy products, removal of the Russian Federation from the World Trade Organization and termination of permanent normalized trading relationship status; supports the efforts of U.S. leaders and the international community to reestablish peace; and reaffirms the commitment of this association and our industry to sustaining and safeguarding democracy and democratic institutions not only here at home, but also abroad.

Manufacturers: A Time of Challenge and Uncertainty

Timmons: More committed than ever to focus on policynot politics, personality or process

Washington, D.C. 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons today released the following statement in response to President Bidens State of the Union address:

President Biden rightly focused on many policies that will keep manufacturing strong in America amid a global crisis. We strongly agree that the bipartisan infrastructure law was an accomplishment of historic proportion, and we continue to support its swift implementation.

We are ready to work with anyone to advance policies that will strengthen the industry, but we strongly oppose proposals that would weaken our industry and threaten our recovery, including undoing the progress of tax reform and imposing policies that would disrupt our workplaces. Manufacturers are working hard to fill more than 800,000 open jobs and connect more Americans with rewarding careers, and some of the actions outlined tonight would make it harder for us to solve this top challenge.

We couldnt agree more, however, that supply chain issues must remain a focus for lawmakers, and were going to continue working with both parties to deliver final competitiveness and supply chain legislation and build on the steps the administration is taking. In this time of challenge and uncertainty, were more committed than ever to focus on policynot politics, personality or process.

As the United States and our allies continue to lend support for Ukraines fight for its democracy, President Biden used his State of the Union address tonight to rally Americans and the world in support of the cause and rightly emphasized the importance of American leadership and defending our shared values when so much is at stake. Manufacturers join this call for unity.

Business Leaders Urge Resolution of U.S.-Canada Border Blockade

The 51勛圖厙, U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Business Roundtable today issued the following statement on the disruptions to trade at U.S.-Canada border crossings:

The泭disruptions we are seeing at the U.S.-Canada border at the Detroit-Windsor Ambassador Bridge and at other crossings are adding to the significant泭supply chainstrains on泭manufacturers and other businesses in the United States.

The business community is rolling up its sleeves to find workarounds and keep facilities up and running, but we are already seeing some production cuts, shift reductions, and temporary plant closures.泭The North American economy relies on our ability to work closely together, including our manufacturing sectors. We need to apply the same spirit of cooperation to tackle this problem.

We泭respectfully泭urge泭the Canadian government to act swiftly to address the disruption to the flow of trade and its impact on manufacturers and other businesses on both sides of the border. We appreciate that the Biden Administration is engaged with the Canadian government, and we strongly encourage officials to泭continue efforts to resolve泭these blockages at the border.

The 51勛圖厙 Pushes for Effective and Efficient Broadband Funding

Get the Latest News

By 51勛圖厙 News Room

Last years bipartisan infrastructure bill, known as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, was a big victory for manufacturersbut now that the bill has been made law, the 51勛圖厙 is still working to make sure funding is distributed effectively and efficiently to the programs and projects that need it. That includes action on $48 billion in federal funding for expanded broadband access and broadband infrastructure, which will be primarily disbursed by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration at the U.S. Department of Commerce.

With the NTIA in the early stages of designating and developing broadband priorities, the 51勛圖厙 recently to submit a set of principles that the process should follow to ensure effective funding allocation.

  • Strong national standards: The 51勛圖厙 supports uniform requirements and industry performance standards across the entire United States. Divergent state and regional regulations can hamper the development of broadband access and interfere with the IIJAs goal of increasing signal availability broadly. The significant funding provided in IIJA presents a valuable opportunity to develop nationwide service standards, which will encourage the growth of our national economic connectivity.
  • Transparency: The NTIA should remain committed to transparency in both program requirements and project allocations, said 51勛圖厙 Director of Infrastructure, Innovation and Human Resources Policy Ben Siegrist. Manufacturers in America support broadband expansion not only for the needs of their local communities, but as an asset to improve American commercial competitiveness in a global business marketplace. Transparency in federal allocations, clarity of purpose and reliability of federal partners will ensure that competitive benefits are achieved on behalf of all enterprises in all regions.
  • Fair, timely and efficient rollout: The 51勛圖厙 encourages the NTIA to develop a framework for investing the IIJA funds through open competition, thoughtful evaluation and without delay. Further, the NTIA can ensure a concise and efficient rollout by avoiding overly complicated language or regulatory processes.

The last word: Manufacturers in America understand the overwhelming value that expanded broadband access and infrastructure will provide for communities, consumers and commercial enterprises in all corners of the country, said Siegrist. From domestic economic competitive advantage to improved livelihoods and neighborhoods, the NTIAs mission through IIJA directives can dramatically and positively impact the success of our national shared interests.

COMPETES Act Supports Manufacturers Call for Stronger Stance on China, Addresses Inflation

Timmons: Lawmakers can feel confident that supporting this bill means supporting the future of manufacturing in America

Washington, D.C. 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons released the following statement today on the introduction of the America COMPETES Act by the U.S. House of Representatives:

The introduction of the America COMPETES Act, which includes many components of the overwhelmingly bipartisan U.S. Innovation and Competition Act,泭is a major step forward, and lawmakers can feel confident that supporting this bill means supporting the future of manufacturing in America. Not only would its provisions help address inflation and alleviate supply chain challenges were facing today, but the bill provides significant investment in U.S. semiconductor manufacturing, which would also help us avert future crises. This bill also includes funding for a Supply Chain Resilience and Crisis Response Office at the Department of Commerce. Ive discussed the programs that this office would oversee with Secretary Raimondo, and manufacturers strongly back these initiatives, which would include game-changing grants, loans and loan guarantees.

This legislation would strengthen U.S. leadership in global climate innovation, improve environmental research and fill critical gaps in dataall while holding China accountable as the worlds biggest emitter. Manufacturers look forward to working with Congress on all elements of this legislation to ensure it meets the needs of our industry and supports Americas manufacturing workers and American families by putting the United States in a much stronger competitive position toward China.

We will work to get it passed through the House and then work with the Senate to ensure that final legislation achieves the critical shared goals of this bill and the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act and makes it to the presidents desk.

Manufacturing Leaders Welcome White House STEM Policy Push

Washington, D.C. 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons and Manufacturing Institute President Carolyn Lee released the following statement on the administrations announcements on semiconductor production and new policy efforts to attract STEM talent to the United States:

The supply chain and economic disruptions facing American families and the manufacturing industry are driven in part by the severe worker shortage and by the serious chip shortage. Today, the White House has announced promising developments on both fronts, and we will work with the administration and Congress to build on this progress even further, said Timmons. To ramp up domestic semiconductor production, we cant stop at todays action, though. Too many manufacturing sectors have been unable to deliver the products American families need because they lack key components. Manufacturers are working overtime to overcome this challenge, but Congress has to do its part, which means passing USICA. Doing so will not only shore up our recovery and ease supply chain strains but also strengthen our economy and national security.

These immigration policies will also undoubtedly sharpen Americas competitive edge and help us outpace and out-innovate the rest of the world. In far too many cases, weve seen brilliant minds educated at American universities leave because our outdated immigration system doesnt let them put their talents to work for Americas future. Now we can start to reverse that trend, among other key policy changes. As part of A Way Forward, our plan for comprehensive immigration reform, we have long called for immigration policies that are responsive to clear economic needs. These policies meet that test, meaning that they will benefit our workers, our communities and our industry, empowering us to create even more opportunities for the American people.

Manufacturers are leading Americas recovery, but we still need to hire more than 800,000 workers right now, said Lee. And according to the MIs research with Deloitte, we will have 4 million jobs to fill by the end of the decade, 2.1 million of which could go unfilled if current trends continue. That sustained need is why the 51勛圖厙 and the MI launched our nationwide Creators Wanted workforce campaign. Its why we have long focused on programs and policies of all types that will grow the pool of STEM talent in America. We have to come at this crisis from every angle, and the MI and the entire industry will continue using every tool at our disposal to inspire, educate and empower the next generation of creators.

All in all, its a day of positive developments for manufacturing in America, added Timmons.

Washington, D.C. Following the Supreme Courts decision to block the federal governments COVID-19 vaccine-or-test requirement for large workplaces, 51勛圖厙 President and CEO Jay Timmons released the following statement:

Manufacturers have a profound commitment to protecting employees and communities. Manufacturers believe strongly in getting our teams armed against COVID-19, and we appreciate the administrations sustained focus on making vaccines accessible to every American.
